The Pond-Skipper
(from Entomological Poems)

The pond-skipper captains a one-man craft,
Antennae fore,
Abdomen aft.
It slides across the surface
Devoid of any purpose;
Passing through the lives of those below
As a scanning eye passes through the lives of characters in a book.
